Make Money While You Travel

We talk a lot on this site about how expensive traveling can be. There are all sorts of tricks and tips out there to help you spend as little as possible while you’re on vacation, and they’re all definitely worth looking into, but did you know you can actually make money while on vacation? It’s true! And it’s easier than you think.

In this article we’ll go through all the different ways you can do just that. So get ready to go on a lot more vacations because now they can practically pay for themselves!

This is the best and most obvious option for making money while you’re out of town. Everyone knows about sites like Air BnB and VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) these days. There’s always going to be people visiting your city while you’re visiting another. So why not let someone pay you to live in your home while you’re not there?! It’s so, so easy and can really make your vacation that much more enjoyable as you know it’s basically getting paid for.

Similar to Air BnB, there are also apps that let you rent your car while you’re out of town. The two biggest ones are Turo and Getaraound. It’s a little more dangerous, obviously, as damage to your car is much more likely than damage to your apartment or house. But there’s a built-in insurance and liability system so even if something does happen to your car, the expense won’t fall back on you.

There are all kinds of travel websites (like, oh, I don’t know, maybe Jetlaggin?!) and Instagram accounts that will pay photographers for their travel photography. So if you have even amateur level photography skills you just might be able to make some money off your pictures while visiting a new country or city. And even if you can’t find any online company to sell your images to, you can always get some prints done when you’re back and sell them in a gallery or to friends and family.

And even more than with photographers, there are countless websites out there that are always on the lookout for more freelance writers. Especially when it comes to writing about travel. They typically will pay out by the article, and it’s never all that much, but it can still make all the difference when trying to spend as little money as possible while on vacation. “Written” is one of the better sites out there that will pay bloggers for their writing, so start there.

This is really cool. There are actually a handful of volunteer programs, Voluntary Service Overseas, to name just one, that you can work with while you travel. In reality, it’s more like you’re just working a new job in a new country for a little while and they’ll cover all your room and board and even give you a small living allowance. It’s a lot of work, but the work is fulfilling and meaningful, and then you’ll still have time to explore and experience a new country. I’m definitely looking into this myself!

Ok, for this one, you’ll actually have to be at least a little bit talented… but honestly not that talented! No matter where you vacation, you can probably find a club, bar, or venue where you could make a few bucks to play or sing a few songs, or tell a few jokes (depending on what talents you may have). So if you’ve ever performed live at all, definitely try to find a few gigs while traveling in a new city or country!
