You never know when life is going to throw you a curveball. From things as big as death and illness to the smaller problems like a breakup, we’ve all been beaten down by life. But more often than not a great vacation can be the best medicine. So here are a few suggestions of vacations you can take when you are in recovery mode.

AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED WITH A MAJOR ILLNESS: FLAGSTAFF

Flagstaff? In Arizona?! Yes. That Flagstaff. It may seem like an odd choice, but when you’ve just learned that you have a new major health problem, it can be the perfect place to gain some perspective. It may be a relatively small city, but it’s got plenty of life and provides a certain ruggedness that can be perfect in such a situation.

For the proper Flagstaff experience, be sure to get there by taking the famous Route 66. Once you’re there, head straight to downtown to take in the many shops, art galleries, and breweries they have to offer. You’ll also be close to the majesty that is the Grand Canyon. A can’t miss attraction.

AFTER A BREAKUP: BANGKOK

Breakups are always tough. And they really follow you wherever you go in your day-to-day life. So sometimes the best way to get over a breakup is to get the hell out of Dodge. A vacation away from your job and your social circle makes it a lot easier to process your emotions and clear your mind. And Bangkok is the perfect location to just that.

It’s one of the most lively cities in the world and has countless fun to offer. Check out the electric nightlife in the Thonglor area and keep your spending to a minimum by enjoying some delicious street food. Then, when you’re really ready to recenter yourself, check out the over 400 incredible Buddhist temples located in or around Bangkok. They’re truly a sight to behold.

IF YOU LOSE YOUR JOB: ST. LUCIA

Obviously, a vacation can be risky move right after losing your job. They can be expensive and you have to be careful with whatever savings you have. But clearing your mind before this important transition in your life can be absolutely huge. And can help you make sure the next job you end up at is the right one for you.

So if you find yourself suddenly unemployed, take a trip to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia. This island is as relaxing as they come. With beautiful beaches, amazing hikes, historic villages and an amazing spa at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort, this little slice of heaven will make you forget all about that former “career” of yours.

WHEN YOU LOSE A LOVED ONE: BUDAPEST

There’s no way around: death is just a part of life. But regardless of how inevitable it is, it’s never easy. The pain felt when you lose a loved one is unmatched. We rarely completely get over the loss, but it’s important to let yourself grieve. And it’s important to let it happen as fast or as slow as it happens. And a vacation in Budapest is a great step in allowing yourself to do just that.

It’s a large and beautiful city that is rich in history while still having the mellow vibe of a much smaller city. There are multiple castles and palaces in the city that will simply take your breath away, and, of course, the city is located right next to the powerful Danube river. While we’re on the topic of the river, be sure to enjoy a dinner cruise along the Danube for a proper Budapest experience. And be sure to partake in some of Budapest’s famous fruit brandy. Because what’s grieving without a little drinking?
