Do You Want In On A $1 Italian Dream House?

Don’t let your eyes fool you. Some Italian villages are selling homes for $1!

“Honey, pack up your things, we’re moving to Italy!” Two villages in Italy are offering homes at little more than one American dollar to lure new residents to their towns in the hopes of offsetting their declining populations. They’ve even launched websites to best match potential home buyers with their “dream” property. Amazingly, potential suitors are even able to apply to purchase one of these homes even before setting foot in the country.

Paolo Caruso, the mayor of Zungoli, one of the villages offering this insane deal has stated “I’ve created a special task force of young volunteers who assist buyers, leasing with convenient construction firms on the restyle… Transparency is key but people must really come see for themselves the beauty of the place, taste the great good and breathe the fresh healthy air.”

Simplicity

The best part about this home-buying process… it’s super easy to get started! Even if you’re not interested, it might be fun to explore the numerous offers. To start, head over to the city of Zungoli’s official website – www.comunezungoli.it – on the left column, look for a bright link entitled “Case in vendetta a E(Euro)1”. Once you open the link, you will be greeted with a list of 50 – 100-meter homes available. They all require some renovation and restyling, which is demanded in the $1 agreement, but this cost is largely tax deductible. From there, download the application form for the properties you could imagine yourself moving into. It’s at this portion of the application at which you must decide if your home will ultimately turn into a private house, bread & breakfast, or artisan shop. Heads up, you must renovate your property, if chosen, within three years. Next, simply attach a copy of your ID and send all accompanying documents to the mayor’s office – email or normal postage is requested. Lastly, when all applicants have been picked, Caruso will send you an official contract regarding the property. This step requires you to actually fly to Italy and close the deal in person.

The fine print does require a 2,000 Euro security deposit and agreement to refurbish the property, but once the property is properly taken care of, the deposit is returned.

A Second Opportunity

There is also another larger town, Mussomeli, in Sicily, which has made this 5 step process even easier. They invested in a new, multilingual real estate agency to handle their own version of these 1 Euro deals.

As above, Mussomeli homes can be seen at www.case1euro.it. Even better, this site is in English. Take a second to look around and view the homes with tremendous potential.

Mussomeli Heritage councilor Toti Nigrelli has stated “Original owners calls us each day to dispose of their old houses. There are 100 on sale now and potentially another 400 are suitable… This project is my life mission but had I dealt with it on my own, I would have gone nuts.”

Clearly, this opportunity is an important call of the mayors and people of Zungoli and Mussomeli. The $1 is much more a once-in-a-lifetime purchase, it’s an investment into their towns for years and decades to come.

The travel world lost a legend this past weekend when Malta’s famed Azure Window collapsed after a storm.   The awe inspiring natural rock arch was destroyed by a heavy storm causing it to collapse into the ocean. Devastating to the locals, as this was a huge tourist attraction. You may recognize the famous arch form movies and television. The arch was featured in the first episode of the hugely popular HBO show Game of Thrones.

A geological study was performed in 2013 and it found that erosion was inevitable but there was no danger of the structure collapsing. Recently the arch introducing fines for people who walked on the arch, as it’s structural integrity was weakening placed signs. This didn’t stop tourist s=from venturing across the archway and onto the jutting rock formation. This wasn’t the cause of its demise though; major storms have been wreaking havoc on the island of Gozo, where the formation is located.

BEFORE

AFTER

An eyewitness form a local town reported seeing violent waves crashing all the way up the Azure Window’s arch and suddenly it was gone.  Gale force winds were reported and the ferry company that brings tourists to the site shut down operations for the day because the weather was so bad. Storms in recent years have been getting worse and worse across the globe as global warming increases. It seems like every year we hear weathercasters forecast the biggest storm in history. That’s not a good sign that the largest and most violent storms ever recorded keep happening, year in and tear out. What can we expect in the near future as wild storms rage across the planet. Hurricanes are reaching record levels every year as well are tsunamis and the Far East.

Scientists predict that weather will only continue to get worse as Mother Nature continues to strike back at us for polluting her water, land and air.

Local residents flocked to the site after word of its collapse hit town. The Azure Window was one of Malta’s biggest tourist attractions and brought in millions of dollars respectively each year.

Could tourism be responsible for the landmark’s demise? Sure, it could have had something to do with it but as we have learned over and over again, if we piss Mother Nature off enough, she will strike back with furious anger. Nature is extremely powerful and everyone who visited this landmark could easily see that its future did not look bright. The brittle limestone that was its base is known for collapsing, so it was only a matter of time. Tourists have been seen jumping off the rock formation into the ocean, often dislodging rocks in their path. Although these rocks have no structural relevance so it’s probably not an issue.

The world is in mourning for a wonderful natural phenomenon that has been taken back by nature. Mother Nature gives and obviously she takes away, I’m just glad that so many of us got to enjoy the majesty of Azure Window.

Luckily there is a lesser-known rock window near by in Wied il-Mielah, so check that out if you are meandering around Malta with no rock formation to look at.

Will European Parliament End Visa-Free Travel for Americans?

American President Trump has been making plenty of headlines with his bold and unprecedented moves regarding immigration and these are having global repercussions. American President Trump has been making plenty of headlines with his bold and unprecedented moves regarding immigration and these are having global repercussions. In a shocking move, the European Parliament has recently called for a vote to end visa-free travel for all U.S. passport holders. This is obviously in response to Trump’s travel ban and other diplomatic moves the new president has enacted. American’s have been divided on Trump’s moves but the majority of them haven’t been affected by these unparalleled moves until now. SO how does the European Parliament’s move affect American’s in general?

American’s have long enjoyed visa-free travel to all of the European Union (EU) countries meaning that we haven’t had to apply for travel visa when vacationing overseas, that all may change. The European parliament introduced a bill that if voted in, would require Americans to obtain visas before entering certain countries. That’s a huge shift to the global market and our freedom as Americans.

Essentially we are losing privileges because of the Trump Administration’s travel bans. If you have been living under a rock for the past few months, Trump has essentially banned incoming immigrants and travelers from certain countries including EU ones like Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania.

So is this a real life outcome? Yes, it most certainly could be unless our governments can work out some sort of resolution. Many believe this is just the EU trying to play hardball with Trump and his minions. I have to agree but it could turn into something much worse. Could this be a sign of times to come? Yes, this could set a president that all other countries could follow in response to America’s strict new immigration guidelines. Could this start a new world war? Sure, anything is possible when you have world leaders with chips on their shoulders like Trump, Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un

What’s next in this tense situation?

The European Parliament, the governing arm of the European Union will meet again and possibly vote on this proposed bill in June. This gives both sides time to cool down and work on a possible solution. If nothing is reached by then, who knows where this will lead. The American’s visa-free travel could be lifted temporarily as a test of the new policy or both sides could agree to terms. It’s all political banter right now and as we have learned recently, who really knows what’s going on in politics?

This is scary times indeed as the travel ban goes into effect and world leaders scramble to discuss possible solutions; we American travelers are left in limbo. Much like foreign travelers trying to enter the United States, American travelers wonder if their upcoming European vacations will have to be altered.

I’ll keep you all posted on any new developments and if you have any doubt, check to see if you need a visa to travel to any destination.   Is it safe to travel, yes, but it’s always good to be knowledgeable of on-going situations like this one.
