European Beach Vacations for the Budget Traveler

If you want to save big on your summer holiday, try visiting one of these seven cheaper destinations for all the bang with half the buck.

Summer isn’t officially here yet on the calendar but someone should tell the weather because it’s hot out there. Time to plan and book your summer vacations so let’s look into where the best deals are for your European beach trip. The hotspots are always busy and not very affordable so maybe we will skip Barcelona, Marseille and the other trendy destinations. If you want to save big on your summer holiday, try visiting one of these seven cheaper destinations for all the bang with half the buck.

Malta

Sure Malta isn’t as cheap as you may wish, but it’s still much more affordable than hotspots like Lisbon or Sorrento. Head to Sliema for a hip beach town filled with designer shops and trendy cafes that won’t totally break your budget. The nightlife is wild and fun and the beaches are gorgeous.

Portugal

Obviously, major beach cities like Lisbon will break your budget wide open, but Portugal has plenty of affordable alternatives. Try Algarve, just down the road from popular Lisbon but nearly half the cost. Enjoy over 300 sunny days a year, warm waters and some of the best surf on the Atlantic coast. This small beach region is a gem and should be visited even if only for a few days.

Cyprus

The ancient Mediterranean beach city of Paphos in Cyprus is the perfect beach destination. Enjoy ancient ruins of the Greco-Roman empires while basking in the warm sun. The city comes alive in the warm summer months and visitors will enjoy the variety of restaurants, castles, and monasteries the old town region has to offer.

Greece

Greece is the Mecca of Mediterranean beaches and many are extremely expensive, so let’s find an affordable one. Try Cephalonia, a small island that rivals Crete for cheapness. Get the most out of your European beach vacation at this Greek island and have the best trip possible.

Bulgaria

OK, hear me out; maybe try a beach destination that isn’t on the ocean. Head to the resort town of Sunny Beach, Bulgaria and save huge on your summer vacation. The Black Sea isn’t salty and has very mild waves; so expect a lake type of vibe with a party atmosphere. The nightlife here gets rowdy and the bars along the beach stay open late.

Croatia

No longer a well-kept secret, Croatia is now a hotspot for vacationing Europeans. Instead of hitting the hot islands or capital city, try Porec for your budget summer vacation in style. The city is a throwback with rustic architecture and an old town that features cobblestone streets.   The water and beaches are great and the weather couldn’t be better.

Italy

Everyone wants to visit the Amalfi Coast in Italy, but few of us can afford such a luxurious trip. Instead try to visit the Puglia region, which is much less crowded and offers some really great deals. Check out the resort town of Otranto, which features huge rock pools and rustic beaches. The stone buildings will bring you back in time and the cheap prices will bring you back.

The same Gift of Travel campaign highlights with different inspirational stories about Air Canada personnel as they do community work, providing assistance related to the fight against COVID-19. These stories can be accessed via the company’s social media handles and website.

On 1 December 2020, the company will launch its Gift of Travel auction. The said auction will highlight rare aviation implements including the opportunity to fly or operate an aviation simulator. It will also feature a ride-on plane for kids and even a chance to have dinner with the company’s most celebrated chefs.

All proceeds of the said Gift of Travel auction will be given to various Canadian charitable groups and organizations that work toward better health for the youth and children.

Also, the Gift of Travel campaign will cover the yearly Aeroplan Matching Campaign week celebrations. This will feature the Air Canada Foundation Hospital Transportation Program, an advocacy to help sick children to get the medical help they need.

Through the Air Canada Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, Air Canada specifically aims to help Canadian children and youth in their medical and health needs. The Foundation also provides financial assistance and in-kind aid to various charitable organizations in Canada.

The company’s Gift of Travel campaign also highlights a Gift of Travel pass that allows convenient travel to one of the six designated locations. This pass will be valid until April 2022 and will provide the bearer with utmost flexibility.

The COVID-19 outbreak has heavily affected Canadian’s capacity to travel wherever and whenever they want. With Air Canada’s Gift of Travel, however, more opportunities to travel—and even to help others—becomes a vivid reality.

Be Flexible

One of the best ways to save is being flexible with your travel plans. Picking the cheapest flights, hotels and attraction tickets can help make ant trip more affordable. Being flexible doesn’t just deal with time; it involves destination, activities and mode of travel. Often times a resort town will have neighboring towns with better deals and cheaper activities and accommodations. Maybe a train or driving is a more affordable mode of transportation. The point is being flexible with your plans and you can save big, meaning you can do and enjoy more on your trip.

Tues/Wed

If you don’t already know, Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days to fly so if you are going for a week, try flying in and out on these days. These are generally the slowest travel days so you win twice. You’ll fly for cheaper and the airport and airplane will be less crowded.

Book Early

It may be too late to book early for the beginning of summer but you still have time to book trips near the end of summer and still get good deals. The more time in between the time you book and the time you travel equals savings.

Price Drops

Most major travel sites will offer price drop guarantees when you book early, so if the price drops, you get refunded the difference. These are free or a few dollars and are definitely worth it.

Membership Discounts

We are already paying for memberships like AAA or AARP, so why not take advantage of the incredible savings these organizations offer. Check with your respective organization and inquire about travel deals. You will be surprised by how large these discounts can be.

Many resorts or airlines offer deals for booking online, so take advantage of these lurking online deals. They are often hard to find so do some snooping and see what kind of savings you can unearth.

If you are renting a car, never get the added insurance; you are already covered by both your insurance and the credit card you used to pay. These rental car companies will lie and tell you that you need the added insurance, don’t fall for their trickery.

Pack Food

If you want to save big by doing almost nothing, simply pack some snacks. Food on the go is so much more expensive than bringing snacks, so save big by doing very little.

Supersonic Passenger Jets are Coming

Is the world ready for a passenger jet that flies faster that the Concorde ever could? I hope so because it’s coming as soon as 2020.

Is the world ready for a passenger jet that flies faster that the Concorde ever could? I hope so because it’s coming as soon as 2020. Thanks to the brilliant forward thinking and huge wallet of Richard Branson, we can expect supersonic passenger jets flying at speeds of Mach 2.2. Yea, you heard me right, that’s twice as fast as the speed of sound. Virgin Galactic and aviation upstarts Boom Technology have teamed up for an exciting project that will bring supersonic jets back to commercial air travel.

The Concorde was doomed by poor technology and a system of regulations that hurt its innovation. Boom Technology plans to change the modern landscape of aviation with its groundbreaking airplanes. This new jet should fly around 100 miles per hour faster than the now retired Concorde.

At these incredible speeds passengers could make a trip from New York to London in 3 hours and 15 minutes. Today that trip takes an average of 7 plus hours. That’s cutting the travel time in half, if not more.

Imagine being able to go from San Francisco to Tokyo in under 6 hours. These are not unreal estimates and you should be very excited. The last major speed enhancement in commercial aviation came in the late 1950s when jets were first introduced. This shift made the idea of a “Hawaiian Vacation” possible as the trip used to take up to 16 hours now only took 6.

Adding supersonic jets to commercial airlines could change the way we look at travel. Now a weekend trip to Australia seems doable instead of the grueling 12-15 hour flight it is now.

Maybe you have business in Europe but wish to be home in time to tuck your child into bed, now you will be able to do that with supersonic travel. Supersonic passenger jets will literally shrink the world even smaller and make the global community that much tighter.

Boom raised a nice $33 million in initial investment to build its prototype, the “Baby Boom,” later this year.

Boom’s biggest and smartest move was partnering up with the legend and one of the best innovators around, Richard Branson. The man behind such innovative companies as Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Money, VirginMedia, Virgin Mobile and countless other brands has another feather to put in his cap.

The Baby Boom’s first test flight is scheduled for early 2018 with it’s full sized big brother being scaled up for a 2020 test flight. If everything goes as planned the full sized Boom aircrafts will be ready for commercial flights as soon as 2023. These specialized supersonic passenger jets will seat 55 passengers in an all-business class arrangement. Expect luxury and class on these supersonic jets, especially if Richard Branson is involved.

The man who owns his own Caribbean Island won’t skimp on interiors, that’s for sure.  I won’t be on the first flight, but I will line up and take a flight, just to say I did.  Expect more incredible innovations coming soon from this young upstart.
